NM Poem 2 In ગુજરાતી/Gujarati & Transliteration

When you read this second poem in the original gujarati/ગુજરાતી or the transliteration, do pay attention to the sounds of the words. In the translation I posted just before this, except for some approximations of vowel sounds, I have not yet captured the rhythms of alliteration and word order  That’s why your seeing and attempting to savor the musical sounds in the original is so important.I admit it is a bit uphill to read another language in transliteration. I hope you’ll find it worthwhile.

Actually, several of Narsinh Mehta’s songs have received a beautiful vocalization but they are available elsewhere on the web. I’d like to keep my focus on the words, meanings, and sounds just as they are for now. So, my next post will be about the meanings of this poem. Just a hint: the first two words: Safal rajani / સફલ રજની means both “fruitful night” which is the translation I have chosen, but also, “successful night.” The latter meaning obviously has some connotations that make the first meaning stretch fascinatingly in the direction of procreation/success-filled night of love.
